Dentures

Dentures

Dentures are an option for patients with few or no remaining healthy teeth. They are a replacement option when most or all of your natural teeth are missing or beyond repair. There are two overall options for Dentures, partial and full. Dr. Mary K. Parent, DMD, will help you decide what the best option for you is.

Partial Dentures

If we can, a partial denture is preferred. These are overall more comfortable for our patients. A partial denture is a removable dental appliance that is held in place with metal clasps to remaining healthy teeth. It is necessary to have healthy teeth to attach the partial denture to, but it is preferred because a partial denture allows you to have more comfort in chewing and talking without the shifting and moving of dentures. Some patients may choose to have dental implants placed to serve as those teeth anchors that are necessary for the partial denture. Dr. Parent will determine through examination if your gums and anchor teeth are healthy enough for a partial denture.

Why Get a Partial Denture?

  • Restore your mouths natural function, we often see patients who have stopped eating certain foods due to their teeth.
  • Multiple teeth missing in the same arch, leading to future problems including shifting and bone atrophy.

Complete Dentures

A complete denture is recommended when there are no remaining healthy teeth in one or both arches. A full denture is a removable prosthesis made of plastic teeth that are set in a pink gum-colored plastic base. This device rests on the gum ridge with an over the counter adhesive.

Full dentures are life altering and is not an easy decision for most of our patients. Dentures will not be the same as having your own natural teeth. They will decrease the variety of food you are able to eat and frequently decrease self-confidence in social situations.

When Would I Get Full Dentures?

  • All teeth are unhealthy and need to be removed or are missing in the same arch.
  • If you are unable to afford more expensive options, such as Dental Implants.
