Dental Implants

What is a Dental Implant?

A Dental Implant is a surgically placed artificial tooth and root. Using a metal titanium device it is designed to replace missing teeth by being surgically implanted into the jawbone. Through a process called osseointegration, the titanium device fuses to the bone, providing a strong base for replacement teeth, bridges, or even securing dentures. Our dentist, Mary K. Parent, DMD, can help you have the look and feel of your own natural tooth with this permanent repair.

The secure fit of a dental implant is more comfortable than alternatives, and much more comfortable than having over the counter glued in dentures. Ask our Hillsboro dental office staff if your gums and bone are healthy enough to be considered a good dental implant candidate.

Why would I want a Dental Implant?

  • To replace a tooth that is missing, this gap could cause shifting of teeth.
  • To stop my jaw bone from decreasing in size, giving me an older appearance.
  • To help secure dentures in place with clasps versus using a store bought adhesive, giving me a much more comfortable feel.

How are Dental Implants Placed?

  • Implant Preparation - We Prepare the Implant Site: The site is prepared by exposing the bone area. Then, using a dental drill we prepare the bone to receive the dental implant. Occasionally, we may recommend a bone graft if the bone has recessed too much.
  • Implant Placement - We Place the Implant: The Implant is placed in the prepared bone and the tissue is sutured. At this point we should be able to place a temporary cap or crown on the dental device and wait for three to six months while the implant bonds to the bone through osseointegration.
  • Implant Crown - Within Six Months Post Surgery: After we have determined that the post is bonded, you will then be ready for your new porcelain crown. This crown offers the texture, coloring and feel of your natural tooth, as if the tooth was never missing. Most importantly, this post is permanent and strong.
