Brushing & Flossing

The simplest dental prevention requires the most commitment from our patients. This prevention is the daily work of brushing and flossing. There is a technique to brushing and flossing and you may have been taught incorrectly.

The biggest mistake most people make is skipping a brushing here and there. Some patients have reported only brushing in the morning to get rid of morning breath. Night brushing is highly important! Without brushing at night, you are allowing the food particles and bacteria to sit on your teeth for many additional hours, meaning the bacteria has hours to work hard to destroy your teeth. The second mistake made is not brushing long enough. Dividing your mouth into quadrants, you should be spending 30 seconds in each quadrant. According to the Academy of General Dentistry, the average person brushes their teeth less than half the recommended time. Your oral health is a reflection of your overall health, let us help you have a great reflection. Review the techniques below as recommended by Dr. Parent.

Brushing Techniques

Brush your teeth a minimum of twice a day. If you have been experiencing dental problems, you may want to choose to brush after every meal. With a soft bristled brush and a fluorinated toothpaste, brush in circular motions at the top, bottom, and between, on the front and back of each tooth. You want to brush for a minimum of two minutes, 30 seconds in each quadrant.

Flossing Techniques

Flossing is very important. Food particles often hide between our teeth. We want to help you floss correctly to keep your gums healthy. Many patients think that simply pushing the floss down between your teeth is sufficient, but we recommend putting the floss between your teeth and pulling up in a C-shape. Repeat this C-shape between each tooth. It is not normal to experience bloody gums, if your gums are bleeding, you need to see us.
